Welcome to
Stuart House Arts & Heritage Centre
Stuart House is a late medieval town house, the architectural and historical significance of which merits the Grade II* status accorded to it. The house was purchased and restored by the Stuart House Trust in 1988, both to conserve the building and to fulfil a community function as an arts and heritage centre.
The House is large and able to offer a variety of rooms for arts and crafts exhibitions and sales, refreshments, lectures, music recitals and heritage exhibitions. Many of the rooms are available for hire
Royal History
Stuart House reflects the changes in politics, fashion and the Economy in the over 500 years it has seen. It first looked east, towards the site of the old Market Place with its Pipe Well. In the seventeenth century it was ‘turned’ to front west onto the King’s Highway (Barras Street).
Architectural detective work enables the visitor to understand and appreciate the House’s layout, with its granite fireplaces, mullioned windows, tower, fine staircase, timber panelling and exposed roof trusses – and secret tunnel entrance.
Cafe & Hidden Garden
Stuart House offers a delightful café, perfect for relaxing with a cup of tea or coffee. Our café serves a selection of light refreshments, including delicious homemade cakes and treats that are sure to please any palate. After enjoying your snack, take a moment to unwind in our tranquil, ‘hidden’ garden.
